WebNov 15, 2024 · On Nov. 15, 1959, four members of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, were found murdered in their home. The brutal farmhouse slayings in which the victims were bound and shot, gripped the nation and shattered its sense of security. Ex-convicts Richard Hickock and Perry Smith were caught, and later convicted and hanged for the killings. During the first few months of their trial and afterward, Hickock and Smith's murder case went unnoticed by most Americans. It was not until months before their executions that they became “two of the most famous murderers in history.” On 18 January 1960, Time magazine published "Kansas: The Killers," a story about the murders.
